It's been a while.. so here's some reflection and updates.

Hello!

It's been a few months since I've updated this blog, but I doubt that anyone is actually reading this.  I have been swamped with school, working and maintaining a relationship, which has all been great but a lot of work.  I decided to pick up a minor along with my Anthropology Major in Human Rights, and that has been a mind-blowing experience.  It just feels right to do so, since I have no idea what I want to do with an Anthropology degree, I wanted to give myself a little cushion and expand my understanding of the world we live in and human treatment.

With that, today a group of people from my church left today for Cambodia, and as much as I wanted to come along, due to school and finances it just wasn't possible.  I decided to chaperone on my high school choir's group to the U.K. instead (which I will expand on a little later).  The main purpose for their is to establish connections with organizations which deal with human trafficking in Cambodia.  These organizations are Hagar and IJM.  I am beyond excited for them, and I can not wait to hear about their experience and gain some insight on this injustice that is not only happening in Cambodia, but all corners of the world.

This issue is very prevalent in Southeast Asia, and as a Filipino who has grown up in the U.S. I did not understand the severity of this issue at all, until I saw the numbers.  This really hits home for me, because I find myself very blessed, but knowing the Philippines is one of the countries that has the highest number of trafficked humans just makes me sick to my stomach.  So many "What If's" have been popping into my head ever since.  Hopefully one day, I can link up with organizations in the Philippines to see what it's like there.  For me, the Philippines is more like home, and I have had so many memories growing up here and there throughout the years, but the sad thing is, is that I have been aware of prostitution and sex workers ever since I was conscious of what sex was.  What makes me sad is that it has become so incorporated into their society, that it doesn't seem that it is an issue anymore.

Back to Cambodia, when Dylan and I went in the summer of 2011, we did not encounter any solicitation for escorts, but I think it is because we were not a group of boys or a group of girls.  Prior to our trip, we were told that they were offered everywhere, but I am actually thankful that I didn't experience that.  I did witness a Khmer woman in westernized attire holding a binder, approaching groups of young men at the entrance of Angkor Wat.  Dylan and I couldn't help but stare, and be curious if what we thought was happening, was actually happening.

OKay, I just wanted to get that all out.

I'll be back during spring break

Bye for now,
-nalovita.
